Talk it Out Tuesday: Nail Length

One of the things I've really experimented with throughout this blog is my nail length. I don't think there is a set nail length everyone should abide to. I really think it is what you are comfortable with, and what you feel looks best on you!

I think my nails were the longest in the Summer 2010:

(Revlon Star layered over ChG Grape Pop)

This picture I think was in in July or August of 2010.

I never realized how long my nails were then! I think this a nice length, but overtime I realized this wasn't really a length I was comfortable with. I'm terrible at shaping my nails, and having long nails that's something you need to be more conscientious of. I'm still in shock looking at this how long my nails were! I

In 2011 I downsized to this...

(Zoya Tamsen)

This was considerably shorter than the year before, and definitely more my speed. I think this is the length I've pretty much stuck with since. There are times I'd go teensy bit longer, and times I'd go shorter.

My most recent nail length as of last week

(Sinful Colors Forget Now)

I think this my absolute favorite length. I wouldn't go any shorter than this, but I'd be comfortable going a just a hair longer (no longer than the Zoya Tamsen photo). I'd guess this would be just a touch passed the finger tip length. I just find my nails so much easier to manage, and look so much better on me short. My nails grow ridiculously fast though, so I'm having to file them down at least once a week or they grow like weeds. I know this is a problem many people wish they could have, but I'd rather not have it!

All in all, shorties on me is how I like to roll! I'm not saying that's how everyone should be at all, because I follow blogs with so many varying nail lengths and shapes. This is just what works for me!

What nail length do you like best or find suits you best?

Happy Tuesday!

  1. I absolutely love the second length on you! That's about my favorite length on me. I actually really like when my nails are long, I think it's due to the fact I had such short nails I chewed on when I was younger. But I love how polish looks on me when my nails are short. One thing I absolutely hate is filing my nails...I just can't seem to get the right shape down!

  2. Great topic, Stephanie, and I think both the Tamsen and Forget Now lengths look beautiful on you! I'm actually working on finding the right nail length for myself at the moment, after recovering from a huge break about a month ago. One thing I noticed when my nails were down to nubs was how crazy-long they'd gotten in pics from before the break! I had absolutely no idea they were that long until I had something much shorter for comparison.

My nail length varies - I like them long enough that you can see the tip over the back of my finger - but not too long. I always am filing them, cutting them down etc. so they're all over the place. I like to switch it up because I think certain colors flatter shorter/longer nails than others!

  4. I used to bite my nails so when I stopped I let my nails get really long. I guess I was just excited that I had nails for a change. Looking back at pictures, I kind of hate how they looked. They were just too long. They were definitely a lot more work too. I much prefer the look of them now. I wouldn't mind if they were a teeny bit longer though. Sometimes I find the length I want but then I deal with breakage and I'm back to nubs. I actually really like the length of your nails!

  5. I've recently stopped biting my nails, so I'm playing with lengths. It looks like longer is what I'll be doing simply because my nail beds are insanely tiny and I haven't been able to really lengthen them. (I have little fingers so that may just be normal).

  6. I usually keep my nails somewhere in between your last two pictures. I like a little length, but not super long. I have pretty strong nails, so growing them out isn't really a problem but I usually wind up catching long nails in drawers or doors and manage to break them. And because I'm lazy and not very good about shaping my nails, it's just easier (and more practical) to keep them at a slightly shorter length.

  7. I keep mine somewhere around your last picture, occasionally a tad longer. With my job, they can't be much longer or I will break them at work. I'm terribly at shaping my nails, and I LOATHE filing them!!

  8. I would be happy if my nails were the length of the Zoya picture. That's what I feel most comfortable with. I have such a hard time shaping my middle nail. It always looks too wide or something??? Does anyone else have a nail that seems all wrong?

  9. I keep my nails very short - what most of the nail community calls "nubbins". I'm on the computer all day, and I cannot stand the feel of nails clicking against the keys. So I keep them below the top of my finger.

I'm fortunate to have extremely long nail beds, so between that and polish, most people perceive my nails to be a LOT longer than they are.

  10. I do. My middle nail grows with a wave to it past a certain length. That's why I keep them so short.

  11. I used to think long long nails were the prettiest and longed for them, but after doing nail art and getting addicted to nail polish and seeing all the blogs with shorter nails and even nails like mine with barely any free edge and now I prefer a shorter length much like your last two pics showed. I actually see really long nails now, and think Eww, those would look soo much better trimmed. On my hands I think that a little free edge looks best like your second pic, but that's really because I have a nail that gets wonky when it gets to a certain length. Funny how perceptions change over time and exposure to new ideas and now I think short nails look cute and are even sexier and more feminine than the long dragon lady version.

  12. I have the same problem with my middle nail! The bed is a little wider, but it also doesn't have nearly as high a c-curve as the others, so I always think it looks like a big ol' shovel scoop. :P

  13. I like mine fairly long but I've seen different lengths look great on different people's hands!

  14. I'm with you on the shorter nails. I think long nails can be pretty, but I have seem some nail bloggers with such long nails they remind me of talons. If that is your thing, go for it, but I certainly don't care for it visually. My nails are super short because they keep breaking. It's actually quite frustrating.

  15. I like short to medium square nails on other people but on me, I think oval nails look best. I feel like my fingers are too skinny for square nails :(

  16. Love your "current" nail length! It's quite similar to mine - I too am filing my nails just about to the end of my fingers. It's a good measure, because sometimes when I'm filing my nails I don't know when to stop lol

  17. I am used to long nails, not ridiculously or disgustingly long, but quite longer than average. I think it suits my hands. Until recently, I've been learning the beauty and "chic-ness" of short nails, much like your last two pictures. I think short nails look best on wider and longer nail beds, that way it extends the look of the nail. But it all depends on the person. I am actually really good at filing and I prefer my nails longer because I love to shape them. The only bummer with long nails is that they are prone to breakage, and once one is broken.. they all have to go (I loathe having drastically uneven nails).
