**Best of 2013 Poll**

I've done the "Best of" polls the past two years, and everyone really enjoyed it, so I'm doing it again!

  • I tried to condense this as best as possible. It would of be impossible for me to include all the indies, and every collection released.
  • The "Favorite Handmade Indie in 2013" list was comprised of the 5 most mentioned brands from the Handmade Indie Poll I had earlier this month.
  • Please do not over think this, just make a selection even if you don't have an absolute favorite.
  • There are so many drugstore brands, so it was very hard to narrow down. I tried to select the ones I felt had the most notoriety this year. I have included the option of "Other" if you have a different favorite.
  • The last question about "Favorite Nail Polish Released in 2013?", I have left optional. I will be making a list of the Top 5 polishes with the most mentions when I calculate the results for the rest of the poll.
  • You have until Sunday, December 22th to vote. You may only vote once. On Tuesday, December 31st, I will post the results of this poll along with my personal picks from the year
POLL CLOSED

Have fun!!!

China Glaze Strike Up a Cosmo

I'm very very picky when it comes to metallic nail polish. I don't like metallic shimmers or chromes. You know the ones that look like flat metallic color? I hate them. I can't really tell you why I hate them, I just do. What I do like are metallic foils. I love metallics that are multi-dimensional. I was initially going to bypass the China Glaze Autumn Nights collection, but when I saw they had foils I was game. This one caught my eye.

Strike Up a Cosmo
Strike Up a Cosmos is a dustry rose metallic foil with subtle gold and silver foil flecks mixed in.

Color: Pinks hardly ever make it into fall collections. I know it's hard to do a fall pink, but China Glaze was succcessful with this one. What I like about this shade is it definitely reads as a neutral, so it is very wearable with any skin tone or outfit.

Formula: Excellent, one coater formula.

Price: I purchased this at Sally's Beauty Supply in the $5-$7 range.

Overall: This is a great not-your-average, but totally works for fall color. This would be excellent in winter and holidays. I really like this, and I found myself wearing this a few times already. Metallic pink for the win!

KBShimmer You Autumn Know

Happy Thanksgiving everyone in the USA! I hope you all have a great day. I have for you a fall/Thanksgiving festive polish today by KBShimmer!

You Autumn Know

You Autumn Know is a white crelly base with varying shapes of orange, gold and fuchsia glitters.

Color: This is a great mix of fall colors. I love how You Autumn Know is a funky fun fall color. I get so used to dark and creme colors that this is a nice transition from that.

Formula: I used 3 coats int he swatch above, and it was easy to use and apply.

Price: This is $8.75 on KBShimmer's website.

Overall: I really like You Autumn Know, it has a great formula, and is a fun and unique polish for fall.

Way-Cool Mani Wednesday: Thanksgiving Glitter Gradient

Even thought I've been in the holiday spirit since November 1st, I can say it is now officially the holiday season in my book. I love the holiday season. Tonight, is also the first night of Hanukkah.  Hanukkah/Thanksgiving combo is pretty epic. I don't know if I can contain myself. I will be making potato latkes instead of mashed potatoes with the turkey tomorrow. Woo hoo!

On to my Thanksgiving inspired nails before I ramble on about holiday cheer, scented candles, and pie.

Polishes Used:
Zoya Angelina & Sindie Pop Jinkies!

Manicure Description:
I painted all my nails with Zoya Angelina and did a glitter gradient ontop using Sindie Pop Jinkies!

Happy Wednesday!

KBShimmer Teal Another Tail

It's still fall right? I have to keep reminding myself that because as soon as Halloween is over it might as well be holiday time. Since, it's still technically fall I have a great KBShimmer fall polish to share with you today.

Teal Another Tail
Teal Another Tail is a dusty teal with a pink duochrome shimmer.

Color: I love this color. This shade of dusty teal is unique for fall and the duochrome shimmer really makes this special. I'm not typically a fan of duochrome in flat metallic polishes, but with a shimmer I am completely sold. I love this effect on a shimmer! The duochrome flashes from pink-gold-bronze depending on light.

Formula: Nice formula on this, though it is sheer on the first coat. I recommend using 3 coats.

Price: $8.75 on KBShimmer's site.

Overall: I consider this a must have polish. Teal Another Tail is a beautiful color with a unique finish. KBShimmer always surprises me something I could of never thought of with nail polish in each collection. This one is a winner, stunner, and all around awesome polish!

Glitt-A-Licia Guest Post: What Are You Thankful For?

I know it is kinda cliche to ask this around Thanksgiving, but seriously, ask yourself, what are you thankful for?

I know that times can be tough, but if you dwell on nothing but the negatives of life, you will miss out on all the positives. So, what are you thankful for?

Here is my list:

10-Alarm Clocks
Without alarm clocks, I would be most certainly unemployed.

9-Microwaves
Without microwaves, my family would starve.

8-Washers and Dryers
Without washers and dryers, my family would be naked.

7- Deodorant
Self explanatory, and everyone else around me is also thankful I have it!

6- Freezers
Without freezers, where would I keep my pizza?

5- Nail Polish
Without nail polish, I would have never met Steph!

4- You
I am extremely thankful for each and every person who takes a few minutes to read my guest posts. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

3- Seat Belts
Without seat belts, there would be no Glitt-a-licia around to guest blog.

2- My Family
My family and extended family has been amazing. I would not know how to function without my family and my in laws!

1- I Am Still Here
After the events of this year, I am beyond blessed that I am still alive. I survived two major automobile accidents. The first, I flipped 3 times, and the second was a head on collision. I am not perfect, but I survived. Anyhoo, perfection is not what this blog is about. Just read the title :)

Soooooo, what are you thankful for? Let me know!

Shine On Reader,
Licia

Sweater Weather Tag- I Tag You!

I saw this "Sweater Weather" tag going around some blogs and Youtube, and I decided to take part. I wasn't tagged, but I'm doing it anyways, because I like living on the edge. I thought this would fun and different.

I changed up some of the questions because some of them included fashion questions about sweaters, boots/uggs, leggings/skinny jeans. I do not own any boots, uggs, leggings, or skinny jeans, and I don't really have a sweater either. I am so incredibly unfashionable I'd make some of you fashionable people cry. I own one little jacket/hoodie that I take out the 3 times of year it gets below 65 degrees in Florida.

1. Favorite candle scent?
Bath & Body Works Snow Day, Better Homes & Gardens Red Wood Pomegranate, and Better Homes & Gardens True Fall Splendor.

This is actually my second candle of Snow Day.I also have the plug ins! People describe this as Twisted Peppermint light. I loathe Twisted Peppermint, it is way too strong for me. Snow Day is a soft vanilla peppermint scent, with a fresh wintery air scent thrown in. I love it!

I'm very impressed with the Better Homes & Gardens candles! The smaller one I got for $4 and the larger one I got for $5 at Walmart. Red Wood Pomegranate is a fruity woodsy scent, and True Fall Splendor smells exactly like BB&W Leaves to me.

2. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

I like coffee and tea, but I don't drink either regularly. I'm a decaf coffee drinker, and will drink maybe a cup 3 or 4 times a week.

3. What's the best fall memory you have?

I always remember going for long walks on Thanksgiving with my parents. We'd always go on short walks, but on Thanksgiving we went for like a 2 hour walk around our neighbor with our dog. I enjoyed the weather, the scenery, and the family time.

4. Which makeup trend do you prefer: dark lips or winged eyeliner?

I can't do winged eyeliner, I am completely eye makeup challenged. I do really like dark lips though. These are some of my favorite dark lip colors this season.
L-R: NYC Sheer Red, WnW Cherry Bomb, NYX Monte Carlo, and WnW Sugar Plum Fairy

5. Favorite fall fragrances?
L-R: Harvey Prince Yogini, Philosophy Inner Grace, Kate Walsh Boyfriend, B&BW Twilight Woods, and B&BW Winter Candy Apple

I love warm, rich, and sophisticated scents for fall and winter, and these all fit that bill. If you like those types of scents you'll appreciate these too!

6. Favorite Thanksgiving food?

This isn't traditional, but I love this squash casserole I make every Thanksgiving. The recipe is based off the squash casserole served at a southern food restaurant in Austin called, Threadgills (if you're in Austin you need to go here!). It's a yummy mix of a yellow squash, butter, cheese, green chili, and bread crumbs. You can find the recipe here.

7. What is autumn weather like where you live?

Autumn doesn't really exist in Florida. I would say it stays uncomfortable hot for most of autumn. When you get int he last month of autumn (which now) we can get milder temperatures in the upper 70's and low 80's. That is not autumn by any means, but it is a relief from the heat.

8. Must-have nail polishes for fall?

These are polishes I've been grabbing for lately. Yes, this was hard to narrow down.
L-R (starting at top): Cult Nails Lamestain, Revlon Chic, Orly Wild Wisteria, OCC Man by Man, KBShimmer Teal Another Tail, Zoya Pepper, and Cult Nails Time Traveler.

9. Is pumpkin spice worth the hype?

I would of said no, if not for yesterday. I've pretty much maxed out my pumpkin spice love last year. I overdid it, but then I found these beautiful morsels of joy yesterday.
Ghiradelli Milk Chocolate with Pumpkin Spice Caramel. OMG. I die. These are heavenly. You can find them in the holiday mix baggies.

10. Favorite fall blushes?
Milani Rose D'oro, WnW Heather Silk, WnW Spotlight Peach, and Milani Red Vino.

That's it! I tag anyone who wants to this, but I'd love to hear your answers in the comments! Copy and paste the questions below and fill in your answers in the comment section.

Here are the questions:
1. Favorite candle scent?
2. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?
3. What's the best fall memory you have?
4. Which makeup trend do you prefer: dark lips or winged eyeliner?
5. Favorite fall fragrances?
6. Favorite Thanksgiving food?
7. What is autumn weather like where you live?
8. Must-have fall nail polishes?
9. Is pumpkin spice worth the hype?
10. Favorite fall blushes?

Way-Cool Mani Wednesday: Cult Nails Fall Funk

Ever since I started doing two accent nails,  I haven't gone back to just doing one. This is probably my favorite nail trend ever as it allows me to be more creative and fun with my nails. This is a recent mani I did using some Cult Nails polishes. I think it's fun, but still fall appropriate.

Polishes Used:
Cult Nails Let Me Fly, Spontaneous, and Walk of Shame.

Manicure Description:
I painted my index, middle, and pink finger with Let Me Fly. I followed up on my middle finger using the Saran Wrap technique using Spontaneous. I painted my ring finger with Spontaneous topped off with Walk of Shame.

Happy Wednesday!

OCC Electric Sheep

I came across this next polish at the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics booth at The Makeup Show Orlando. They probably had around 30 nail polishes to choose from, and this color immediately stood out to me. This is strange to me because this is not a color I typically would be drawn to, but this one caught my eye!

Electric Sheep

Electric Sheep is a soft lavender with a strong silver shimmer.

Color: This color is so unique to me. I don't think I've seen such a soft shade with such a strong shimmer. I can't even really describ how I feel about it. This is just a funky color. It's soft and pretty, but funky too? Plus, it's called Electric Sheep!

Formula: The formula on this was fine. I used 3 coats. The shimmer in this is more intense, so this polish does show some brushstrokes. I don't find this to be overpowering at all nor would I consider this a frost.

Price: This is $10 on the OCC website

Overall: I like this one, it's cool and different. I love lavender polish, but silver shimmer isn't typically my thing. I really like the shimmer in this one, it gives it a cool futuristic finish IMO.

Silly Bee's Chickadees: Steph's Toy Chest Swatches & Giveaway

* The following post features a product sent for review and sponsored giveaway.

The day has finally come! Today, is the release of Silly Bee's Chickadees The Gift of Melly collection. I was so honored to be asked to be a part of this project. There are 5 polishes in this collection, each inspired by 5 bloggers, 5 holiday movies, 5 great causes, and all created by Melissa of Silly Bee's Chickadees. 20% of each bottle purchased will go to the charity of each blogger choice.

My favorite holiday movies have always been the original Home Alone films. I was always awestruck by the scene in Home Alone 2, where Kevin goes into the massive Duncan's Toy Chest store completely decorated like a Christmas wonderland. I love everything and sparkly and festive, so this was my inspiration for my polish...

 Steph's Toy Chest

My charity of choice is the SPCA of Central Florida. I spend 1-2x a week here volunteering. If you follow my Instagram, I'm sure you're used to my bombardment of cat pictures on Wednesday and Fridays! The love, care, and attention given to these animals by staff and volunteers is incredibly heart warming and inspiring to me. This organization not only has made the lives of dogs and cats better, but it has made my life richer.

On to swatches!

*****
Steph's Toy Chest is a is a magical glistening topcoat with loads of gold shimmer, red, evergreen, lavender and light green "ornaments"

This is such a versatile glittering top coat. I love it over dark colors and light colors. The layering options are endless. I used 2 coats over each base.

L.A. Girl Birthday Cake

*Today is the last day to enter my SH Bling in the New Year mini giveaway

One of the most frustrating things when shopping for polish online is not being able to see swatches beforehand. L.A. Girl is a brand typically sold at Rite Aid. I don't have a Rite Aid. Also, L.A. Girl isn't what I'd call a very mainstream popular brand (I think it needs to be though), so swatches are few and far between.

Cherry Culture always has 20% off sales running, and I knew off hand I wanted some of their 3D Effects and Sand Blast polishes. I then came across a new line from them called "Pop". The Pop line was further divided down into smaller sub lines glitters, brights, and so on. I spotted a crelly polish with multi-colored glitter in the Pop Color Clash line called Birthday Cake. The line is so new and since L.A. Girl polishes are so hard to come by anyways, there were not any swatches. I decided to take a gamble.

Birthday Cake
Birthday Cake is a soft cool-toned bubble gum pink crelly with multi-colored glitter.

Color: I'm sure your'e wondering how this might compare to Claire's Candy Shop? Check out KellieGonzo's swatch of the Claire's one. They're different. I think the L.A. Girl one is better. The base is creamier, more opaque, and I think it's more flattering shade of pink. The glitter is much more sparse and smaller though, but I prefer it that way.

Formula: The formula on this was OK, it was sheer at first, but built up nicely in 3 coats.

Price: This is $4.00 on Cherry Culture. I would wait until they have another 20% off sale though, they have them all the time. If have a Rite Aids near you, check there!

Overall: I love Birthday Cake! This is just one of the girly and fun colors that puts a smile to your face. I love the color of the glitters in this. Pinks can be hard for me to pull off with my skin tone, but this shade is very flattering. I'm a fan, it worth the gamble.

Way-Cool Mani Wednesday: November Holiday

The holiday season seems to start earlier and earlier, doesn't it? I'm one of the people who doesn't mind. I have always loved Christmas decorations and music. I love any excuse to make things sparkly and pretty. I'm sure that's one of the reasons I love nail polish so much. Sparkles and shimmer round!

I tried to hold off decorating for the holidays at least until the week of Thanksgiving, but I failed. I always do. Outdoor decorations will wait until Thanksgiving week, so my neighbors don't think I'm nuts. Indoor decorations are in full swing!

Since, I'm in the festive spirit early, how about a shimmer and sparkly mani that would be great for this holidays!

Polishes Used:
Sally Hansen Co-bolt Blue & Essie On a Silver Platter

Love! This fits the holidays without being so literal Christmas red and green. This would be a great Hanukkah mani too. Hanukkah falls during Thanksgiving this year, and we're actually only 2 weeks away from the first night. I'm not too early after all!

Happy Wednessday!

Zoya Pepper

I have tons of nail polish, but I don't have everything. I was recently craving a medium brick red creme. I didn't have one. I saw Zoya Pepper on many blogs, and knew that was brick red creme I wanted, however, I felt could find a similar shade at the drugstore. I mean reds are really common nail polish colors?

Wrong. I could not find what I was looking for. I found cooler-toned deep reds. I found stuff too dark. I found stuff too light. Then, when I thought I found a winner it was jelly not a creme. That became this biggest issue was a ton of deeper or warmer reds were jellies not cremes. Why?!? Cruel world. Blarglemonster.

So, in immense desperation because I couldn't find the Zoya fall collection at Ulta yet, nor did I want to pay $8 + shipping on one color, I begged someone to swap Zoya Pepper with me. Many thanks to Essie over at iHeartPrettyPolish for obliging. The medium brick red creme crisis had ended.

Pepper
Pepper is a medium brick red creme.

Color: If I had not rummaged through the drugstore like a crazy person, I'd probably say this is an everyday warm red creme. No, it's not. This is actually a unique shade of red and it's a true creme.

Formula: Easy breezy. No issues. I used 2 coats.

Price: $8.00 on Zoya website. You may be able to find this at Ulta now.

Overall: I love Pepper! It's the perfect not too dark fall-winter red. The formula is great, and it fills a hole in my collection. I also think this would make a great holiday red,  if you're looking for something a little more subdued and classic.

Help! Who are your fave handmade indie brands?

It's getting near that time of year again. Imperfectly Painted every year does a best of year poll. This poll is posted on December 1st, and it asks you your favorites in nail polish this year. In order to start working in this year's poll I need your help!

One of the categories is favorite handmade indie brand of 2013. There are TONS of indie brands, so I  cannot list them all. What I can do is poll you first, and ask you who your top 2 are. I will then calculate those results, and the 5 indie brands who receive the most mentions will be the nominees in this category.

On the form below please list your choices. It does not matter which choice you put first or second.

Quick Guidelines:
*You must only pick indies made by hand (This excludes brands like Cult Nails & Pretty Serious).
*You cannot mention the same brand twice.
*You have until November 17th to vote.

Glitt-A-Licia Guest Post: Black Friday

Ahhhh...It's the time of year that I love. Soon that magical day will be here and people everywhere will have the holiday spirit! I look forward to this day every single year since I was a little girl. So let's get our game faces on and grab that $1 DVD out of a toddlers hand (his mom only brought him because he is little and can get through the crowds.) Let dignified ladies turn into UFC fighters over a cheap, never heard of that brand tv. Let's put fear over the workers pulling straws as to who will be opening the doors this year, because the dude who did it last year is still in a full body cast.

Yes my friends! Of course I was kidding in the paragraph above (do not, I repeat, DO NOT assault toddlers over a $1 DVD), but Black Friday is slowly approaching. Nothing can stop this force of nature from coming, not even time! They have already released some Black Friday ads as of Nov 1st.

I have gone every year to Black Friday back when it was actually fun and not scary. My aunt and cousin would spend the night at our house and we would stay up with the sales ads and plan our shopping strategy. We would laugh and play cards, then be up by 2am hitting the sales! We would have this planned so perfectly, it was like we were robbing a bank!

Oh the memories I have of Black Friday! When a particular store had the Cracker Jack sale, my little cousin wiggled through and got a whole box of Cracker Jacks! We hid on the side and opened every Cracker Jack packs only to find they were all 10% off, so we passed them out to other people who did not get a coupon.

One year, my mom's purse managed to get wrapped around some guy's neck in all the chaos! Both of them had no clue her purse was wrapped around his neck until they started going opposite directions and she nearly choked him. Lol! That was the same year my mom was going to buy me a table top fountain for my room and the people would not let her use the coupon because it had a plug! Lol!!!!

I have jumped on counters, grabbed items put of workers hands, and witnessed fights. I have stood in line for hours at the check out just to save $2. Oh, and being pregnant did not slow me down! Two years ago I was 5 months pregnant carrying a crib mattress all over the store just to get to the check out and get told it was not on sale. My hormones took over, and needless to say, I got my mattress ;) lol

Now, most of the fun of Black Friday has disappeared. The deals are posted weeks in advance. Who even needs to get the Thanksgiving Day paper for the sale ads when everything is on line? My aunt and cousin don't spend the night, and I have moved over an hour away.  Furthermore, Black Friday has gotten scary and dangerous. Heck, someone shot the glass out of one of our local stores!

Now, I shop Black Friday online in my jammies and pray the sites I shop do not crash. Nevertheless, my mani today is in honor of all the good memories of Black Friday. Polishes used in this mani Super Black Lacquer Murdered Out, Glitter Gal Turbulence, and Wicked Polish Black Friday from Llarowe's A Box Indied.
(I freaking love this WP!! It reminds me of Revlon Street Wear that I wore in high school!!)

Cult Nails Lamestain

If I haven't seen swatches of nail polish, I definitely buy from what I see in the bottle. If what is in the bottle looks amazing, then there is a good chance (not always) that it's going to look good on the nail. I will admit, Cult Nails Lamestain was not a color that struck me in the bottle. Lamestain color is blackened creme and part of the All Access collection. I bought this as a set, and this color out of all rest I figured would probably not wow me. I was very very wrong. Lamestain on the nail is totally different story!

Lamestain
Lamestain is a deep ox blood creme.

Color: This color is dark, but it doesn't translate as straight up black on the nail. I can see the red tones in this polish. Lamestain is just one of those chic, elegant, and sexy on trend colors that everyone needs. I couldn't stop oogling over my own nails when I wore this. I'm from a cool and fashion forward, but I felt like was pretty darn cool wearing this!

Formula: Excellent. I used two coats above. This formula is super shiny and glossy too, that's what I believe makes this color.

Price: $12.00 on the Cult Nails website. This is pricey compared to most of my polish, but well worth it.

Overall: This is not a typical color for me, but I am in love. It's colors like this that make me fall in love with nail polish again. The color is rich and dark, but is nice variation from your standard black. The formula is on point and glossy. Great all around polish. I say every girl needs this! Must have.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 Paint Splatters
