Talk It OutTuesday: "That don't impress me much"

"Talk It Out Tuesday" is a monthly sometimes twice monthly post where I ask readers their opinion on a particular topic. These topics range from nail polish, beauty, blogging, and etc.

This week's topic is "That don't impress me much".  (Sorry for the bad Shania Twain reference, but it popped in my head)

I got the idea for this topic when talking to some other bloggers on Twitter. I find that more I collect nail polish the less impressed I am by newer collections. I've noticed this happening a lot lately.

For instance, I was really looking forward to the holiday collections, but now that I'm seeing some of them I have a generally feeling of "meh". I saw OPI Muppets swatches and the collection in person, and I quickly passed them by. Zoya winter collection is a total flop to me. China Glaze Let it Snow, I see maybe 1 or 2 wins. I had similar feelings in regards to fall collections.

What do I think is happening?

1. "Been there...done that"-  I think when you have a lot of nail polish, a lot of it starts to seem the same after awhile. The more you have the more likely you are to have similar colors or dupes of upcoming or new colors.

2. Change in tastes- Last year, I was really into glitter bombs, while this year I'm not. I love the look of glitter bombs , but I realize I hardly ever use them. It's too much work for removal. :P

3. Price isn't worth it- I may not necessarily dislike a lot of new stuff, but it the price isn't worth the purchase. If I'm not going gaga over it, then I don't really need it.

4. Will these really become HTF if I don't purchase them now?- I notice this a lot in regards to the more talked about collections like OPI, China Glaze, & Zoya. Majority of these I can go online 6 months from now and find them somewhere for the same price, if I decide I really want them. Is there really a hurry to get it now?

5. Lesser known brands/Drugstore Brands overshadowing mainstream brands- For example, Maybelline Cool Couture, L'Oreal Owl's Night, Butter London Wallis, Cult Nails Hypnotize Me, WnW On the Prowl Collex, Revlon Edgy Elegance Collex, Revlon Facets of Fushia & etc. I find these collections and individual polishes are strong winners over colors released in collections from our tried and true brands.

These are the 5 major things I can think of for me personally. I don't think it's the polish companies, it's me. I think the more I have the harder it is for you to impress me. I think the more unique the better, that's why the other brands are peaking my interest more. Funnily enough, I'm not disappointed that a lot of collections are not impressing me. I'm not complaining either. It's saving me money, and I'm discovering great polishes from other brands.

So what am I looking forward to?

Essie Luxeffects & NOPI Kardashian Collection (I know strange, but I love the colors) the most.

Do you find the more you collect the harder you are to please? Are you still gung ho about new collections? What collections or polishes are you most looking forward to?

Happy Tuesday!

  1. Totally agree with you on all counts.  I am starting to get to that point now (not easily excited/impressed).  It's like when you first start collecting, you have nothing to go off of so everything is NEW and EXCITING!  But the reality is, there are only so many colors in the rainbow!  Honestly, I can't think of a single polish that I am SO SO SO looking forward to right now :/  It's kind of depressing, huh?  Hhahahaa  I like having something to look for.  I was majorly seeking out the Wet N Wild On The Prowl collection, and I found it.  Now though, there is nothing on my radar.  I went through the same thing with my eye shadow "collection" (which is ridiculously extensive).  I would collect a certain brand  and after YEARS of trying to get every one, I started thinking that new ones looked like old ones and, they DID.  A little tweaking here and there, but do I really need 2 silver eye shadows that look almost identical except one has micro pink glitter that is not visible once on, and the other has gold?  Man!  Now that I've relaxed on the eye shadow collecting, I look at my hoard of them and think, "what the hell is all of this?!".  Maybe I have a problem :)

When I saw the winter collections for Zoya, OPI and China Glaze I didn't like them at all! I do like some from China Glaze, but that's it.
I don't find I have that many polishes, but I'm just not really into some colors or finishes or whatever. So I'll just buy what I like :P

  3. Agreed! I was pumped for the OPI Muppets collection, but when I started to see swatches, I no longer had any desire to spend money on it. On the other hand, the WnW On the Prowl collection looks awesome. I've been stalking my local Walgreens, waiting impatiently for it to come in. And I can get what, four WnWs for the price of 1 OPI?

  4. I agree with you on most points. I am completely obsessed with The Muppets since I was a little one.  A lot of collections are looking boring. Like you said, perhaps one or two here and there. I am loving that the drugstore brands have been kicking it up a notch. I am a sucker for Halloween collections though. So no matter who puts it out or if I have a color like it, I will buy them haha. I love glitters even though they are a pain to remove. I think I am rambling by now! Hahah

  5. I agree with you on all counts, especially removal of glitter bombs! I love and use the foil method, but it's still a lot more work than removing a nice creme or shimmer. And yes, after awhile, I don't need another medium purple shimmer, even if this one is a tad more plum than the others.

One thing that's really slowed down my acquisition of new polishes over the last 6 months or so is that I really dislike most of the new color trends. They are grayed out, sad colors. I paint my nails to make me happy - and there are lovely sophisticated colors from earlier collections that don't make me feel like a month of rainy Mondays.

I'm with you on the more expensive polishes - unless it's grabbing me by the throat and not letting go, I'll probably find something else I like just as much at the drugstore at half the price (and probably with a coupon, since Maybelline and Revlon often have coupons in the Sunday paper!).

I am looking forward to seeing the Christmas collections because they're always my favorites - probably because they're usually happy, pretty colors. But right now I don't plan on buying more than 2 or 3 bottles total.

  6. I totally agree with you! I have only been into nail polish since the beginning of this year, so I haven't really been around for that long. However, in that short amount of time I have collected an insane amount of polish, and a lot from older collections.

I was so excited for fall and winter collections to come out this year, because those are the type of polishes I am drawn to. However, the "big box" brands collections to come out were pretty much a big disappointment. I did enjoy China Glaze's fall collection, but OPI? FAIL. Touring America and Muppets were two huge flops in my mind. China Glaze holiday only has 2 out of 12 that I'm interested in. I don't like Zoya anyways, but I have seen so many people disappointed over their holiday bar glitter collection as well.

And then, we have our drugstore brands. They really have stepped up their games lately. Not too impressed with the Sally Hansen fall offerings (though I picked up a bottle of Pumpkin Spice just for the name). But Revlon, L'Oreal, Wet n Wild, and Maybelline really have hit it out of the park lately. So thank goodness for them!

  7. I agree with you. All of the bigger names seem to be coming out with dupes of each other. I always look forward to the winter/Christmas collections I missed out last year and I didn't want to miss out this year and the only one that I will buy from is China Glaze and maybe only two of them. Been there seen it and it didn't impress me the first time. I think they should bring back some of the OLD polishes from like the 90s. (Sally Hansen Chrome Makeup) My biggest thing is the finishes, all you see it cremes, shimmers and glitter bombs it feels like. Why not do more "Chrome", metallic and foils? (Color Club had a great idea with their Foiled Collection)

  8. I'm with you on the glitter bomb.  I used to love it, but now feel my tastes are a little more demure.

  9. Agreed. The Muppets Collection lacks the tongue in cheek whimsy that makes The Muppets The Muppets...

  10. I am the same. exact. way.  I'm so glad you wrote this because I was wondering if I was the only one! I feel like everything I see I already have and I don't really even have THAT much polish! (At least not compared to other bloggers!) It's SO disappointing!

  11. I've only been collecting polish for about a year, so I still see lots of polish that is different from anything I have. Part of me feels like I need every color ever, and by that, I mean every shade of every color in every finish, so that whatever I feel like doing, I've got EXACTLY the right polish.

That said, I'm on a tight budget, so I'm still pretty selective in what I buy. I'm more inclined to get excited about collections from less expensive brands (like China Glaze and lower), polishes I think will be versatile (will wear well by themselves, work for stamping, etc.), or are really exactly my taste (not just a cool, unusual color). I have to admit, I'm also a sucker for themes, so OPI gets me on that front. The Muppets are cool and all, but Pirates of the Caribbean? Yes, please! Model's Own Beetlejuice? I want to go to there!

  12. I'm glad you found On the Prowl! I still haven't found it yet. I think the newness of collecting definitely makes you impulsive, so you feel like you have to have it all!

    ReplyDelete
  13. That's what I'm loving right now. These less expensive brands creating equally great or better colors than the higher priced ones. It's refreshing!

    ReplyDelete
  14. No you're fine! That's cool you like Halloween collections. Those are always fun.

  15. Everyone loves the foil method, and it works, but it's  pain and the butt to get out foil and wrap you nails etc. I spend too much time taking care of things in my real life, I want to be lazy with my hobbies. I don't want to spend a lot of time removing glitter!

I know what you mean about the colors lately. They're not my favorite, but a lot of them have grown on me, except pukey green and brown. That will NEVER happen!

  16. It's interesting to hear that even new people into nail polish are bored. Maybe, it's not just me! I usually love Zoya. I think it's pretty much a given I'll end up getting at least 1 or 2 Zoya from each of their collections. This is not the case with their holiday one. I hate bar glitter, and the other colors are very yawn-worthy. I am disappoint. The Sally H glitters did nothing for me too, but you're right other brands are doing great!

  17. I wish they would bring back those older polishes. They definitely seemed to have more pizazz than the latest releases. I'm really impressed with Color Club Foiled collection. I love foily-shimmers!

  18. I think I like the idea of a glitter. They always look so pretty in the bottle, but on the nail it's too much work.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's nice to know it's not just the crazy people like me who have a ton of polish. Maybe I'm not so crazy after all?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, I've become very very picky. I may like a few things, but I have to really think if I need it amongst the other polishes I have.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "I guess being in this blogging niche has made them oversaturated for us?" <---- YES. EXACTLY.

    ReplyDelete
  22. No you're not. Cheapies are winning in my book lately.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think in a way you get disillusioned with it all. You love nail polish, but once you get a certain amount you realize that they can only make so many great things. So, you're just kind of waiting around for the next great thing.

  24. You want to know a secret? One of the reasons I like doing my Bottle Spam Saturday posts is because it helps me weed out dupes. I have so many dupes to colors that I didn't even realize. Owl's Night is great!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm sure Muppets will become HTF soon, that makes me nervous. I don't want to regret not getting some for that reason, but I don't even really like the colors? See how I stupid that is?!? What I notice is the less I'm spending on other brands, the more money I'm reserving for brands like Butter London, because I'm liking their selection more. So, instead of getting 10 bottles of less expensive brands. I'm getting 2-3 bottles of something pricier. I used really be against spending more than $10 on polish, but lately with the selection, those are more appealing. I just get less!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Exactly. I think we're very impulsive when first get into nail polish. It's a thrill to get a lot and have it all. I think once you come back to your senses you start to realize what is really worth it and what isn't.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You have strong willpower. I wish I wasn't so "OMG PRETTY POLISH!" when I first got into it. You're not rambling at all, you've pointed out a lot of great things I didn't think about.

What's interesting is sans this Muppets collection not being my taste, I've enjoyed OPI putting out more stuff. Overall, I've been impressed with their releases. You're also right about LE drugstore polishes. It's frustrating. I don't even bother anymore looking for WnW stuff, because I know I won't find it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Themes draw me in also. I think if I was big Muppets fan, I'd probably get them. I loved the Pirates collection based theme and the names. I admit I sometimes buy polishes just for the name. :P

  29. Word!!
I feel the exact same thing! Closing in on the 4000 mark I guess I will have to accept it, but still.. the polish world has grown duller lately.. :-(
