Sally Hansen Nail Prisms Blush Diamond

***Mini rant below. These are purely my opinions!***

I don't know what it is, but I absolutely loathe the China Glaze Tronica collection from the core of my being. This sounds insane.. I know, but I really despise them. They are sad excuses for holographic polishes. Their "holographic silvery-ness" overwhelms the pigmentation of the colors. Plus, the "hologarphic-ness" is hardly holographic.  I feel like people new to nail polish collecting and blogging are getting jipped with these "holos". There are better holos out there. They may not be easiest to find, but they are out there!

Some great holos come from the Sally Hansen Nail Prisms Collection. Here is a nice one. :)

Blush Diamond
Blush Diamond is a magenta scattered holo. This has a similar effect as the China Glaze Kaleidoscope holos.

Instead of just ranting on and on about Tronica, I would tell you all some of my favorite holo polishes, and how you can get them.

Sally Hansen Nail Prisms- This collection is no longer out, but they are not difficult to find and they are not expensive. You can find these on eBay or Amazon. You can also find some on Cassie Cosmetics. I've seen these go between $2-$6 average. You can find out all about the Sally Hansen Nail Prisms and swatches on Vibrant Point of View nail blog.

OPI Designer Series- There are some discontinued colors in this collection, but there are still a handful available online at TransDesign  for $7.25. You can also find these on eBay, Amazon, Ulta, & some other beauty supply stores for varying prices. If you see them for a higher price they are most likely the discontinued ones. You can find many of these swatches on Scrangie- Part 1, Part 2, & Part 3.

China Glaze OMG & Kalediscope- These are more difficult to find, and they are at a higher price. You can find these on eBay, but personally I wouldn't pay more than $15 for them now. I also see these on many blog sales, and have heard of people finding them at "dusties" for a lower price. Swatches of these collections can be found on Scrangie- OMG & Kalediscope.

Milani 3D Holographic- These are definitely not the best holographic polishes, but they are good. I like these better than Tronica. I think they have a stronger holographic effect. These are also the easiest to find. I've seen these at Walgreens, Target, KMart, & CVS anywhere between $3.50-$5.00. Here are swatches on Scrangie.

The rest are holos I have not had personal experience with, but have heard many rave reveiws about.

Nfu-Oh- They have a few holographic polishes, #61 is most popular, but is currently out of stock. They also have other colors. You can find them on FabulousStreet for $12.50. There are a few swatches of these on The Nailphile .

Nubar- They released a collection of holographic polishes called the "Prism Collection". You can see the collection on Scrangie. You can buy these individually for $9.49 or the entire set of 8 for $59.95 on Nubar's website.

Glitter Gal- This is a brand out of Australia. I do not own any personally, but I've heard them reviewed very highly from blogger friends. I'm not 100% sure on the price, I'm pretty sure they are pricier, but from the photos I've seen they seem worth it. You can read reviews on them on Scandalously Polished & Also Known As. You can find these polishes on Glitter Gal website.

I've also heard great things about Gosh- Holographic & Make Up Store holos. I don't know much about these or how to find them, but if anyone has more info please let me know in the comments.

Sorry, to be all ranty about Tronicas. I know some of you love them, and that's totally fine! I'm sure it's nice to have a holo collection out there if you were not around for earlier holo collections. I'm sure I'd be all over them too. I just wanted to share that there are better holos out there that you can find now. :)

Happy Tuesday!

P.S. If you know of any other holos out there that you like, please let me know in the comments!

  1. I saw you mention on twitter a couple times how you couldn't stand the Tronica collection and I had been wondering why.

I have 1 Milani holo and 1 OPI DS holo but that's it. I'm bummed I missed the China Glaze OMG collection. When I first started blogging it was easier to find but I had no job then. Oh well! I have seen a few pictures of the Tronica collection though and I'm not very interested.

Thanks for all the suggestions and links!

BTW - Blush Diamond looks great!!

  3. Makeup Store holos are Super Holo. I have Britta, and it is almost a dead dupe of the pink Nfu oh. however, I've seen many posts recently on the changing of the holo in both Nfu oh and Makeup Store, and they are much less "holo" than they used to be. Still holo, but not like they used to be. For our American gals interested in makeup store holos, if you go to the makeupstore website, click on america, find the Denver Store, and call them, they will direct you in how to order the product. =)

  4. I do love the Tronica collection, recognizing that they definitely lack in the holographic department. For one thing, I don't have any true holos. But for another, it's a nice way to get a similar effect on a more subtle, work-friendly level.

I'm looking forward to the arrival of a Nfu Oh order I placed after Tronica whet my appetite for a REAL holo!

  5. Nubar also came out with a green linear holo color called "Reclaim" whic came out in some all green colors collection a while back.

  6. Thanks for the in-depth list of holos! I've been wanting to get my hands on something holographic for a long time; things like Tronica just don't cut it.

Unfortunately, holos tend to be in higher-priced ranges. Snap.

  7. I'm so glad you got that out of your system. LMAO!

  8. I'm not a huge fan of the Tronica collection.. I own two, and that's mainly because I just love the color of the bases, not the holo.

The Kaleidoscope collection is definitely my favorite, even though I only have one! The OPI DS are okay, they newer ones tend to be a lot less holo than older ones. I love Milani's and Sally's! I also like the Color Club holos.

  10. I agree Tronica is lacking in the "holo" department, but you must remember, not every one likes "blinding holo"...LOL! :)

Some of my followers like Tronica a lot because it is "understated" and "work-friendly". :)

Me personally, I like only certain ones from Tronica, and although I prefer "blinding holo" (like you), I still like Tronica for other reasons!

All that said, I love your blog and I love your rant even more..LOL :)

  11. I agree that they dropped the ball majorly.
It's still early, and there's plenty of time for other companies to mess up, but for me, the tronica collection will probably be one of the biggest if not the biggest polish disappointment of 2011. *shrug*

  12. Ooops, forgot to add that I read somewhere on the web that the "dust" used to make "holo's" HOLO, is very expensive and difficult to make, so maybe that's why polish companies are using less of it ?

    Just a thought :)

  13. I have some GoldenRose holos, these are a really fabulous deal, plus they are not bad holos.
They are out of Turkey, but I've had decent luck with them. 119 in the little square bottles is very nice, black based.

I will also say that a lot of the Catherine Arleys (spelling!!) look really nice, too.

Tronica, wow, I had mine out in the sun yesterday and still can't get much holo. I feel like I fell for it. Suckah!

I do love those old SHs! For the price: such a deal!

  14. They just don't make holos like they used to :( I bought the whole Tronica collection and I'm not... disappointed exactly, I'm just not thrilled to my usual holo standard. I agree with the previous poster, Golden Rose holos are pretty nice too! I'd also add that anyone who gets into the Nfu Oh holos might want to consider the Aqua Base!

  15. Tierney- Yeah, I think it's b/c when this collection was introduced we expecting some more great holos, but these aren't even close to just decent. I think you should look into getting some Sally Hansen nail prisms these are great substitute and easy to find. :)

LadyLuck- Exactly! I hate how that silvery fake holo stuff drowns out the base colors. :(

Scandalous- Thanks for posting on how to get MAke Up Store holos!

Ya Gotta- Thanks for pointing that out. I can see how these would be good for work-situations, a nice way to be a little flashy without going overboard. I hope you enjoy your real holos! :)

OliviasNaisl- Thanks for bringing that one up. Green holos are scarce!

Dara- Yeah, that's the unfortunate thing about holos is they can be pricey. I'm all about saving money when it comes to nail polish, but good holos I think are worth the occasional splurge.

Lacquer- Yes, I needed to it was making me nutty!

attackedastoria- Thanks for mentioning Color Club. I know they have some nice ones too

Charlotte- Thank you for the award. :)

Jackie- I know not everyone likes a "blinding holo", but come on now..I'm sure majority of lacquer heads are in the market for blinding holos! I do like your point though with work friendly, I never thought about that, and Tronica would definitely be more appropriate. However, with a name like Tronica I was expecting something with more a punch! You're probably right about the pigment thing.

Chaos- I totally agree. It's funny b/c when It was first brought up we were all over it. We NEEDED these, then the swatches came, and the mention of them pretty much disappeared.

Paillette- Thank you for bringing up Golden Rose holos. I would of brought up Catherine Arleys, but I've heard some no-so-stellar things about their shipping and their business policies. I think they maybe improving though?

Mimi- I actually liked your swatches of them. In general they are nice colors, but for being holographic polishes they don't come close to delivering that. :-/

  16. I have been tempted by the Catherine Arleys. I am not sure if they "get it" on packaging, though.

  17. Well crap...now I have to bookmark this post and go find all the aforementioned Halos! ;) I like the Tronca collection but I agree that halos just aren't what they used to be!
