Girly Bits Defying Gravity

*The following products were provided in exchange for my honest review.

I'm not done with Cosmoprof goodies yet! I still have plenty to share with you. This next polish is from Girly Bits. Girly Bits is a brand that I have regretfully not purchased from in a while. The indie world can get a little overwhelming for me, but being able to try some of her polishes recently has ignited my love for the brand. I will definitely be frequenting Girly Bits again. This polish, Defying Gravity is a collaboration between Girly Bits and Phyrra to celebrate Phyrra's 7th blog anniversary.

Defying Gravity
Defying Gravity is a medium purple with an intense turquoise shimmer and a touch of holo sparkle.

Collection: Blogger Collaboration Series

Color: Defying Gravity is an amazing multi-dimensional color. The turquoise shimmer really stands out and flashes on your nail against the purple base. It really has such a neat effect on the nails. The holo sparkle just adds another awesome layer to this polish too.

Formula: This had a great formula. It was smooth and easy to apply. I used 3 coats above.

Price: This is $9.84 on the Girly Bits website.

Overall: I love Defying Gravity. This is the type of nail polish that has everything in one. Sometimes when you have too much or too many of a good thing it doesn't always work out too well. This is not the case with Defying Gravity, all of the components work beautifully together to create a stunning polish!

Weekend Un-Lacquered Reviews: OGX Kukui Oil Shampoo & Conditioner

I have a shampoo/conditioner review for you today! Some of the biggest issues I have with my hair are oily roots, dry ends, and the humid climate I live in. I would say for all intents and purposes I have straight hair. It's not bone straight, but it doesn't have any definable waves or curls.

The humidity does weird things to my hair. I don't know if frizzy is the appropriate world since my hair is not curly or wavy, but the ends of hair tend to get fluffy or flip up at the bottom. Whatever it is, it's not cute.
I had been using the OGX Kukui Oil  Anti-Frizz Hydrating Oil the past few months with some good results, that I decided I'd take a chance on the shampoo/condionter. The Kukui Oil formula is really made for people with dry, frizzy, and curly hair. My hair doesn't really fit any of that criteria, but I find despite having oily roots that hydrating hair products work better for me than stuff geared for oily hair that strip and dry out my hair.

I bought this shampoo and conditioner without looking up reviews which is not something I do often these days. When I got home, I looked up reviews and saw these were reviewed very poorly. People either loved it or really hated it. People mostly hated though claiming it either did nothing or dried their hair out. I almost returned them without trying them, but I decided to give them a shot.

The results? I LOVE this shampoo/conditioner.

Product Description: Sulfate free. OGX's Kukui Oil indulges your tresses with this exotic blend of kukui nut oil, an ancient Hawaiian secret used for its humidity resistant abilities, creating a shimmering gloss to smooth and repel humidity, to help make every day a "good hair" day.

Time Used: I've been using these products for a month now.

Scent: This has a warm coconut tropical scent.

Consistency: The consistency of this shampoo is very thick and I almost want to say chunky. I know that sounds unappealing, but it's not. You can actually see the little kukui oil bits in the shampoo which is reassuring that you're actually getting the product described. It does come out of the bottle easily though it's just thicker than normal shampoo. The conditioner is smooth and thick and similar to the texture of most conditioners.

Application: This lathered really nicely for a shampoo with out sulfates. I did not find I needed a lot of this shampoo at all to cover all of my hair.

Price: You can purchase this at drugstore and big box stores in the $5.50-$8.00.

Results: The midshaft of my hair to my ends is usually dry after any shampoo. I have to say the Kukui Oil shampoo and conditioner eliminated that entirely. My hair feels fully moisturized from root to tip. It's silky, shiny, and so manageable. This shampoo/conditioner combo most definitely repels humidity for me. I find after a day outside my hair hasn't done funky things at the ends and keeps its shape. I have oily roots, and I don't find this exacerbates the issue either. My hair feels completely balanced with these products. I'm a happy camper.

It goes to show you how varied the experience is with beauty products. I was not even going to give these a chance based on the reviews I read, but this turned out to be a star product for me. I can't say the same for other people. I think there are substantially more factors at play with hair care products rather than nail polish. I wouldn't let negative reviews dissuade you from trying a product that interests you. You may have a different result!

Rimmel Salon Pro Saturn

Last week, I was mentioning my disappointment with drugstore nail polish lately. I rarely any nail polish I'm interested in at the drugstore anymore. It sucks and I really miss finding drugstore polish. I did happen to find one recently though. I was browsing CVS recently and saw little "NEW" signs next to some of the Rimmel Salon Pro colors and I find a color that caught my eye!

Saturn
Saturn is a metallic olive-bronze shimmer.

Collection: Rimmel Salon Pro Core

Color: This is a beautiful and rich shimmer. This is one of those colors dependent on the light it can look more like an olive golden green or a bronze-brown. I love the intensity of this color and it's absolutely perfect for fall. I also found it be a very flattering shade as colors like this don't tend to look very nice on my skin tone.

Formula: I love the formula of these Rimmel Salon Pro polishes. I have a reviewed a few in the past and they continue to impress me. The formulas are very smooth, buttery, and easy to apply. I used 2 coats above.

Price: I paid $2.99 for this at CVS

Overall: This is an absolute and must needed drugstore win. I love the this rich color, and it's not your average drugstore nail polish color. The formula on this as well as the other Salon Pro polishes is consistently great, and you can't beat the price tag.

I Trust Indie Polish

The Mentality issue I brought a few days ago has really blown up all over the inter-webs. Mentality really needs to be held accountable for their actions and their mistakes. What I don't want to happen though is for all indie nail polish brands to suffer because of one incompetent brand.

I can't talk about the legality of things, regulations, FDA, chemicals, and etc. I'm not familiar enough to discuss that aspect of things, but I do know this Mentality situation has caused concern for the entire indie market.

What I can say, is that I've been involved in the nail polish community and into nail polish since late 2008. Indie polish started to come onto the scene in 2011. I'm not the most fervent indie purchaser, but I've been buying indies since their fruition. I've probably purchased from around 50 brands over the past 4 years.

I have never ever experienced or heard about any harm caused by indie polish ever until Mentality Nail Polish. I've been around the block. I'm an old school nail girl. I know this stuff!  I know there are people who have never tried or heard of indies who are completely turned off by the idea based on the Mentality articles popping up on major publications. I know there are people in our own nail community who are approaching indies with hesitancy now too.

I will always continue to support indie brands because I know there are hundreds of excellent makers in this market. Mentality has made one big and very ugly mistake, and they absolutely 100% need to face the consequences. I am glad they've been put on blast based on the harm they've done to their customers. I just want people to know that despite this one horrible brand and incident there are hundreds of indies out there you can trust.

The brands I'm listing below are trusted brands by me. These are brands I've personally used and many I have had positive and personal communication with in the nail community.

KBShimmer
ILNP
Cupcake Polish
Different Dimension
Glisten and Glow
Savvy Naturalista
Sweet Heart Polish
Loaded Lacquer
Frenzy Polish
Girly Bits Cosmetics
Firecracker Lacquer
Darling Diva Polish
Northern Star Polish
DazzleGlaze
Supericially Colorful Lacquer
Serum No.5
Bliss Polish
Painted Polish by Lexi
Emerald and Ash
Elevation Polish
Pahlish
Glam Polish
Silly Bee's Chickadees
Sea Lore Polish
Black Cat Lacquer
Love, Angeline
Krafty Gurl Designs
Hare Polish
a-england

There are hundreds of other brands besides these I've listed I just do not have experience with them. I recommend searching your favorite bloggers to find their recommendations too. I know many other bloggers have made IG posts and other social media related posts mentioning their trusted indie brands!

Support the indies you love! I think if anything during this nasty ordeal it's made me appreciate the excellent indies out there.

Happy Thursday!

My Very First Indie: Girly Bits Shift Happens

I recently was asked to join (thank you Polished Pathology) a group of bloggers who do monthly InLinkz posts featuring indies. This month's prompt was our very first indie. Looking back through my indies made me realize how long the indie movement has been around. I always seem to refer to it as a newer concept, but it's been around at least since 2011! I had to go back into my blog archives to discover my first indie. I kept thinking it was Floam, but it was a Girly Bits polish I got in 2011. Shift Happens was my first indie and I remember exactly why I needed it.

Shift Happens (over KBShimmer Right as Reign)
Shift Happens is fiery color shifting shimmer topper in a red sheer base.

This polished arrived when people were desperately searching for Clarins 230 a very similar dupe (Clarins 230 comes in a purple sheer base). People were spending a ton of freaking money on eBAY for Clarins 230 then. Max Factor happened to release a dupe to the Clarins 230 polish to at this time too, but it was only available in the UK. Many people in the US were paying for people in the UK to get them a bottle.

Then, Shift Happens arrived and that solved all of our polish problems! This polish is absolutely stunning! It has this beautiful lit-from-within glow to it that adds so much dimension to a polish especially dark colors. This is like magical pixie dust in a bottle.

I have to admit, I don't think I've taken this polish out in years. I feel like a fool now because as soon as I put it on I was mesmerized with it's beauty. This is a definite must have for any nail polish lover. You cannot go wrong with this polish.

Thankfully, this polish is still available for purchase! You can purchase it from Girly Bits for $9.86.

What was your first indie nail polish?

DazzleGlaze All Night Glow Stick

I discovered a local indie this past weekend! I went to a local indie art/craft fair yesterday, and DazzleGlaze was set up there. I have been familiar with the brand. We even have a mutual friend, but I never tried the brand or met the maker. I was so excited to see indie polish represented locally! I immediately was attracted to DazzleGlaze's stunning jelly glitters, and purchased a handful. This is one of the colors I picked up.

All Night Glow Stick
All Night Glow Stick is a deep purple jelly base with green and purple glitters and holo glitters.

Collection: DazzleGlaze Slammin' 90's Summer Collection Summer 2015

Color: I was immediately attracted to this color because of the contrast between the purple and those bright green glitters. I love this color combination and it's not one I see often with nail polish. I love the amazing sparkle in this, and I love that it's a jelly glitter.

Formula: This was a great easy to apply formula. I didn't have any issues with having to fish for glitter. I used 3 coats above.

Price: This is $8.00 on the DazzleGlaze website.

Overall: I love All Night Glow Stick, the color is very true the name. I love the color combination and the holo sparkle. This is a blingtastic jam-packed glitter polish that makes me very happy. The formula was great and on par too.

Mentality Nail Polish

I'm sure many of you are aware now of the issues with Mentality Nail Polish. I'm not going to get into all the exact specifics. I'm more interested in sharing my opinions, but I will link all other bloggers who posted about this below who have more detailed information

Mentality released some neon nail polishes between April-June that caused some very severe and unfortunate damage to some peoples nails in the way of lifting from the nail bed, discoloration, and pain/sensitivity. This is a disturbing problem in itself, but what is even more troubling is Mentality's complete lack to promptly and effectively report this issue to their customers.

Mentality felt that using Instagram in July was an effective way for them to share this information. As to this day Mentality, chooses only to use social media to update on this situation, leaving I'm sure thousands of people in the dark. Mentality has been in business a long time and has been a well-known and popular indie. They have thousands of customers, not all of which are social media users. The type of damage to peoples nails you'll see pictured in some of the blog posts linked below is absolutely unacceptable for them not to immediately take charge and notify all of their customers.

This needed to be by email. They are an online business, so they have all of their customers email address. A mass email should of been made to notify their customers of what is taking place as well as a notification on their actual webpage. Instead, Mentality has been quiet about the issue except briefly on social media. I see now it's because they are most likely not insured as a business and do not have the funds to refund their customers. I don't see any other reason why they would be so covert about this whole situation.

As far as I know up until today, if you heard about this through the grapevine Mentality would offer to replace the polishes or refund (though I'm not sure anyone was actually refunded). Today, Mentality announced they would no longer be replacing or refunding people for these nail polish as well as shifting blame on their customers and the nail polish community for "bullying" and "harassment". This on top of them promoting new collections and sales on their faulty neon polishes.

Am I in the Twilight Zone? This can't be real. I have never come across a company so unprofessional and unethical in my life. It is absolutely disgraceful how the are treating their customers. First, they don't give them the courtesy of disclosing this information in a timely matter to their customers. Secondly, they now refuse refund orders. Thirdly, they're calling concerned and upset customers internet bullies.

This is not only peoples money they've wasted, but they've put people at risk to their health. Again, am I in the Twilight Zone? How is this OK by any means? How is this the correct way to handle an issue as a BUSINESS. Did I mention they've also left their stockists high and dry with this too?

A business should treat their customers with respect and their customers safety should be their priority. Mentality clearly doesn't have concern for their customers as they're more concerned about covering their asses. It's shameful that this brand is part of this community. These people do not deserve to be in business anymore. I don't wish failure on people, but this is unacceptable and they need to be shut down. They do not deserve to be a part of the wonderful indies out there who do wonderful work and care about their customers.

Integrity and respect especially in terms of how you treat people are values that are of the utmost importance to me in my life. These are values I expect in my friends and family. I also expect these values in businesses. As a paying customer I feel people are owed these values. It should be common sense to treat customers with respect and value. That means going out of you way when you've done something wrong to try and make it right.

I do not feel the slightest bit of pity for Mentality. They dug their grave and that's their own fault. I will never review, support, or post about Mentality on this blog.

HPB Presents: August Neon Mani

It's time for another Hobby Polish Bloggers blog link-up. The theme for August was neon. I'm thankful, I can do neon, doesn't require me to figure out nail art! I had fun time picking out colors for this mani. It also made me realize I'm low on neons. Low, as in I maybe only have 15, which would be plenty for most people, but I feel like I need more. I know I'm insane. Here is what I came up with!

Polishes Used: Orly Hot Tropics, Color Club Warhol, LeChat Honeydew, and KBShimmer Sun & Games.

Third Week Throwbacks: Revlon Just Tinted Desire

All of my throwback posts are making me miss when drugstore polishes were good. Indies really have pretty much eradicated the need for cool drugstore nail polish. That's not a bad thing at all because now we have such a wide selection and variety of cool nail polish out there online. It's just I miss finding some awesome stuff at the drugstore where it's more accessible. The Revlon Just Tinted collection was a cool offbeat collection created by Revlon a few years back, that fed our desire for jelly nail polish. Speaking of desire...

Desire
Desire is a bright medium pink jelly.

Collection: Revlon Just Tinted Summer 2011

Color: This is a pretty standard nail polish color, but it's jelly! Jellies I still think are a pretty under-developed area of the nail polish market, and in 2011 a drugstore jelly was an amazing find. I love these brightness of this pink and squishy look.

Formula: This formula is pretty sheer. You could wear these in less coats for a very sheer/tinted effect or you could do like all the other nail polish addicts and build it up in 3-4 coats for full on jelly effect. I used 3 coats here. The formula was easy to work with and apply.

Price: This can be found a few etailers still reasonably priced.

Overall: This line and Desire were a great find, and some of my first true jelly polishes in my nail polish collection. Plus, I just loved the bottles! Beautiful color and a nice nostalgic memory.

Third Week Throwbacks: Sally Hansen Opulent Cloud

There is one aspect of nail polish I do miss that has almost gone away since the advent of indies. I really "the hunt". Before indie nail polish mainstream and drugstore nail polish is all we had to shop from. When someone spotted an amazing drugstore nail polish that became the "it" polish that everyone had to have. Pretty much any drugstore nail polish that was spectacular was almost always limited edition.

This meant stalking multiple Walgreens and CVS stores to find this polish. I remember hitting 4-5 drugstore a day trying to find some of these highly sought after nail polishes. Sure, it was time consuming and frustrating, but it was also part of the fun! This Sally Hansen polish was one I hunted for.

Opulent Cloud
Opulent Cloud is a steely gray-blue with an intense golden shimmer.

Collection: Sally Hansen HD Fall 2009

Color: The color is exactly what the appeal was with Opulent Cloud. I love the combination of cool and warm tones in one polish, and this is exactly that. This gray-blue with that warm golden shimmer is such a beautiful and unique combination.

Formula: The formula on these is decent. This color is a bit brushstroke-y, but I can forgive it for the type of color it is. I used 3 coats above.

Price: Sadly, I think this one is impossible to find at this point to purchase.

Overall: I love Opulent Cloud. This color combination is amazing, and I love how unique this polish is even 6 years later. This one isn't going anywhere in my collection!

Third Week Throwbacks: China Glaze 2NITE

It's time for our monthly throwback week! I got into nail polish just a few months shy of the ever so loved China Glaze OMG collection. Thankfully, I didn't get into too late where I could not find these. I remember I purchased a few of these on Head2Toe Beauty just as they were being phased out.  In hindsight, I wish I had bought the whole collection at the time, but I didn't know better then. I am happy with the ones I purchased and they're never leaving my collection. This color is one of my favorites.

2NITE
2NITE is a medium blue linear holo.

Collection: China Glaze OMG Collection Spring 2008

Color: This is an awesome blue holo. It looks very galactic/outer space like to me. It makes me think of Star Trek because I'm a Trekkie nerd. I love the linear holo in this, and I don't know if I really see true linear holos like this anymore? Can any direct me to any indies with holos this linear?

Formula: This is where I know I've been spoiled lately. This formula is decent and works well enough, but it's not nearly as nice as current holo formula we see in indies. It is a bit patchy and sheer on application, but it is totally workable. I used 3 coats above.

Price: These are VHTF (very hard to find) now, especially at a reasonable price. I do come across some on eBay for some hefty price tags.

Overall: This is such an amazing nail polish. These holos are ones that really come to life on your nail. I always tend to bypass these in my collection because in the bottle they don't look that striking. These on the nail though have a really strong holo effect. I can look past the lackluster formula on these because of just how great it is in every other way. 2NITE is a gorgeous vintage polish!

Sweet Heart Polish Vegas Nights Duo

*The following products were provided to me in exchange for my honest review.

Happy Friday! I have a another new to me indie brand to share with you today. The Vegas Nights duo is made my Cassandra of Sweet Heart Polish. This is a duo made for Cosmoprof, but fear not, these polishes are actually available for you to purchase!

Jubilee
Jubliee is a pink linear holographic polish with red micro holographic glitter.

Believe
Believe is a black linear holographic polish with purple and blue micro flakes.

Collection: Sweet Heart Polish Vegas Nights Duo Summer 2015.

Color: These are both great colors. I love seeing black holos. I haven't seen many lately, and it's nice to see them now. Plus, I'm craving some darker colors in these oppressive summer months. I also love seeing pink represented!

Formula: All of the formulas were nice and easy to use. I found Believe a bit sheer on first application, but it was fully opaque in 3 coats. Jubilee was opaque for me in 2 coats.

Price: This duo is $20 on Sweet Heart Polish's etsy site, or you can buy them individually for $10.

Overall: The Vegas Nights Duo is a great duo with 2 beautiful polishes. I love the color choices and they both had nice formulas.

Superficially Colorful Stay Classy Las Vegas

*The following products were provided to me in exchange for my honest review.

I have a new to me brand to share with you today. This brand is Superficially Colorful made by Jin all the way in Israel. Jin came to Cosmoprof in Vegas last month and provided all of us with one of her polishes. This particular polish was exclusive to the Cosmoprof event, but I wanted to share it with you so you can get an idea of what prettiness she has to offer from her brand.

Stay Classy Las Vegas
Stay Classy Las Vegas is a cherry red with a golden holographic shimmer.

Collection: Cosmoprof 2015 Exclusive

Color: These is a saturated cherry red. The color is pigmented, and I love golden shimmer, especially the holographic kind.

Formula: Excellent formula! This applied smoothly and evenly in 2 coats.

Price: This particular polish isn't available for purchase, but her polishes for sale are $9.00 each. Check out her shop!

Overall: I love reds like this. I'm not one to tired of reds at all, and the golden holo shimmer is just icing on the cake. The formula was also impressive.

Different Dimension Cosmologically Speaking Part 2

*The following products were provided to me in exchange for my honest review.

I have some more Cosmprof pretties I received at the Cocktails & Colors party. This collection is from Different Dimension made by Missi Barry. I have had a handful of Different Dimensions on my wishlist for awhile now, but never got around to purchase any. I'm kicking myself now, because Different Dimension should of been a mainstay in my nail polish collection awhile ago. These polishes are amazing!

Cosmic Ray
Cosmic Ray is a fuchsia pink holo with holo micro glitter.

Retrograde
Retrograde is a bronze holo with holo micro glitter.

Space-Time
Space-Time is a teal-green holo with holo and blue micro glitter.

Blue Shift
Blue Shift is a bright blue holo with holo micro glitter.

Quasar
Quasar is a lilac linear holo with holo micro glitter.

Absolute Zero
Absolute Zero is a champagne-nude holo with holo micro glitter.

Collection: Different Dimension Cosmologically Speaking Part 2.

Colors: These are intense and saturated colors. I was blown away with how opaque and pigmented these holos were. I love the intensity of these colors, and the holo is STRONG. These are not shy holos at all. These holos were so strong they were messing with my camera!

Formula: Absolute polish perfection. These were the best holos I've ever used formula wise. These glided on my nails with ease. They were so easy to apply. I barely had to do any clean up with these. I used 2 coats on all swatches, but there are few here that could easily get away with one they were so opaque.

Price: The polishes are $12.00 individually or $66.00 for the entire set on Different Dimension's site. Also, if you use the coupon code CPNA2015 you can get 30% OFF your entire order through 8/31/15!

Overall: The Cosmologically Speaking collection has some of the best holos and nail polish in general I've come across ever! These colors are rich, intense, and have an amazing holo effect. The formulas on them are all absolutely perfect. Go ahead, with that coupon code get the entire set. You will not be disappointed. These are hands down contenders for my Top 25 of 2015!

Pahlish Watermelon Punch

*The following product was provided in exchange for my honest review.

I have another Cosmprof indie Vegas polish to share with you today. I picked up this one at the Cocktails & Colors event from Pahlish. She had offered a polish of hers to each of us as we visited with her at her table. This one immediately caught my eye. It was eye searing bright pink and that was enough to sell me on it!

Watermelon Punch
Watermelon Punch is a neon watermelon pink crelly with white, violet, and blue flakies.

Collection: Pahlish Tropical Trio July 2015

Color: Pink is not a color I really see celebrated or released in nail polish much anymore. I get it, it's a pretty general color and no very exciting in comparison to others. I love an amazing and innovative pink though and Watermelon Punch is just that. This bright crelly pink with the added flakies is different, fun, and definitely a one of kind pink shade.

Formula: The formula on this was a little bit on the thick side. I could still work with it, but I'd prefer if it were just a tinge thinner. I used 3 coats for full coverage.

Price: Please don't get mad at me, but this one isn't available anymore :(. This I think was LE for last month and part of a trio of 2 other colors.

Overall: I love this creative and fun pink shade. This nail polish brings and smile to my face with just how bright and awesome it is. It also makes me crave more fun pinks like Watermelon Punch. Awesome pinks are possible!
